In a lengthy blog post from 343 Industries community writer Alex Wakeford dissecting the opening episode (it’s full of spoilers!), the matter of the lead character removing his helmet is addressed, seemingly in response to fan criticism. The post notes that the games “have predominantly been a space for player projection”, but fans of the expanded universe shouldn’t be quite so surprised. “For fans of our expanded universe, who have read The Fall of Reach and other media centred around the Master Chief, taking the helmet off is something that they’re actually quite used to - our literature and comic formats have allowed for that kind of storytelling,” it reads....

Crucially, these particular mercenaries have access to huge Arsenal mechs, and each successive missions sees players sliding and zooming across vibrantly hued post-apocalyptic arenas blasting the bolts off enormous robot enemies driven by corrupted AIs. Mechs are fully customisable with new weapons and upgrades, and players can even delve into the murky world of body modification if they wish, subjecting their avatars to everything from simple cosmetic enhancements to massively invasive surgical procedures that imbue certain perks but can have a major impact on their appearance....

That’s according to Business Insider, which reports that Xbox is looking to offer advertisment revenue to “developers who make free-to-play” games. “One of the sources speculated Microsoft isn’t currently interested in collecting a cut of ad revenue because it wants to provide more money-making opportunities to developers who make free-to-play games,” the publication said, as transcribed by our sister site, VGC. The official PlayStation blog post reveals MLB The Show 21 will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on 20th April 2021. A PC version was not mentioned. The newly designed downloads page features “new implementation” that has been “visually redesigned for clarity and ease of use”, making it much more user-friendly. Here’s the science bit, courtesy of Valve: When a game/update is actively downloading it will now display the total progression completed for the download or update. Previously the progress bar would only display the downloading content progress but not the disk allocation process which would make an update to appear completed when it was not....

Star Wars Battlefront was notably absent amongst announcements of a Jedi: Fallen Order sequel from developer Respawn, a new first-person shooter also from Respawn, and a new strategy game from Bit Reactor… and also Respawn. Venturebeat reports that EA’s Star Wars output has now been “siloed” at Respawn - which will also continue to work on its popular battle royale Apex Legends....
It is perfect. Now, I don’t know if that’s because I happened upon a particularly golden series (pun intended for those in the know), or whether I reacted in this way because it was all so new to me. Maybe it’s just Australians being brilliant at reality TV. But this show has everything. There’s the immediate hook of having two teams of people who need to survive on a desert island near Fiji for about a month, if they last that long....
